Herman R. Frazier Political Science Scholarship

The Department of Political Sciences awarded the first Herman R. Frazier Scholarship in fall 2002. The scholarship is given to a deserving political science student each year. Students are invited to apply by completing the application and writing a brief essay on the relationship between government and/or politics and sports. The scholarship is funded through generous donations from the colleagues and friends of Herman R. Frazier, a 1977 graduate of ASU with a B.S. in political science.

Herman Frazier’s most recent honor – a first for an ASU graduate – was his selection as a recipient of the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award, presented to him on Sunday, January 13, 2002, at the NCAA Honors Dinner in Indianapolis. The NCAA Silver Anniversary Awards are presented each year to six former student-athletes who have made significant professional and civic contributions since completing their intercollegiate eligibility 25 years ago.

Herman Frazier is a talented and accomplished administrator as well as a world-class collegiate and Olympic athlete. Throughout his career Mr. Frazier has made a significant difference on the national sports scene. He is currently the director of athletics at the University of Hawaii. He represented the United States Olympic Committee as chef de mission of the Athens games in summer 2004. As a track and field student-athlete, Mr. Frazier led ASU to the 1977 NCAA title. He won a gold medal in the 4×400 meter relay and a bronze medal in the 400 meters at the 1976 Olympics. During a 21-year career at ASU (1979-2000), Mr. Frazier held a number of positions in the Intercollegiate Athletics Department, and was a senior associate athletics director at ASU. To celebrate and honor Mr. Frazier’s lifetime achievements, his friends and colleagues initiated the Herman R. Frazier Scholarship in ASU’s Department of Political Science.

Calvin M. Holman Political Science Scholarship

Calvin M. Holman served as an Arizona Legislator from 1975 to 1984. Calvin Holman was particularly active in the politics of north Phoenix, Scottsdale and Paradise Valley and was a loyal and active member of the Scottsdale Sunrise Rotary Club.

In honor of his memory, the Calvin M. Holman Political Science Scholarship was established to recognize (1) an undergraduate political science major on the Tempe campus who embodies the community spirit, honesty and hard-work ethic of Mr. Holman, (2) who has an interest in a legislative career or legislative policy area, (3) is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and (4) has a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher.

Sarah Anne McNeil Memorial Scholarship

Sarah Anne McNeil was killed in a car accident on December 17th, 2004. She was 21 years old. At the time of her death, Sarah had a double major in political science and kinesiology and carried an overall GPA of 3.9. As a way of honoring her industry, her spirit, and her character, the Department of Political Science established in January 2005 this memorial scholarship. Each spring one political science major will be designated a “McNeil Scholar.” The Scholarship carries with it a minimum award of $500.

The McNeil Scholarship is open to any political science major a) with a GPA of 3.5 or above and b) who either has at least one additional major or can demonstrate a focus on teaching-in the future, currently, or in the past-or who works, has worked, or wants to work with children. By meeting one of these last two criteria, the McNeil Scholar will thereby reflect one of Sarah’s interests.

Interested applicants should fill out the application form and write a brief essay (around 500 words) on one of two topics: 1) the importance or value of combining the study of political science with at least one additional major or 2) the role and importance of teaching or otherwise working with children in today’s society.

Ross Rice Scholarship

The family of Ross Rice established an award in his honor. Ross was the founding member of the Department of Political Science, which at one time was part of ASU’s Department of History. Ross was for a long time the curator of the Carl Hayden papers in ASU’s Hayden Library, and just prior to Ross’s retirement, he completed an extensive biography of Carl Hayden, Arizona’s first U.S. congressman and first U.S. senator.

The Norma F. Schuessler Scholarship

The Department of Political Science at Arizona State University is pleased to announce the first annual competition for the Norma F. Schuessler Scholarship: a scholarship in the amount of $500 awarded each Spring to a student who is amassing an outstanding academic record in the face of challenges uncommon among political science undergraduates. Mrs. Norma Schuessler, after whom the scholarship is named, was a trailblazer in her time. A first-generation American born in Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1910, Mrs. Schuessler eagerly took on the academic challenges confronting women of her day. After graduating from Indiana State Teacher’s College with a degree in physical education, she became a teacher and then a wife and mother, living on a farm where she learned to drive a tractor, plant gardens, and tend to the animals. With her husband, Hermann Schuessler, she raised three children while also devoting her considerable energies to her church, her community, and the education of her children. In keeping with her longstanding interest in and support for higher education, she encouraged her children, fostering values that would assure their academic success and that would be passed on to her grandchildren as well.

To this day, Mrs. Schuessler remains an advocate for higher education, maintaining a special interest in seeing young women meet today’s challenges and succeed academically, much as she met the challenges of her times. Now, by way of this scholarship, Mrs. Schuessler wants to extend that example and support to students who, by virtue of the special challenges they take on, can be considered trailblazers in the same spirit.

The Schuessler scholarship is in general open to women and men who are majors in Political Science at Arizona State University, who have demonstrated financial need, and who have completed no less than 60 and no more than 105 credit hours toward the baccalaureate degree. Other eligibility requirements can be obtained upon picking up a copy of the application form.
