Legislative Incentives for Future Excellence (LIFE) Scholarships
The LIFE Scholarship is a renewable scholarship for residents of South Carolina who are enrolled full-time. Awards are made automatically; no scholarship application is required.
General Eligibility Requirements
- U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen under state residency statues.
- South Carolina resident at the time of high school graduation and during the period of the award.
- Graduated from a South Carolina high school or was a dependent of a parent or guardian who was at the time of the student’s high school graduation a legal resident of South Carolina.
- Full-time undergraduate seeking a first baccalaureate degree.
The HOPE Scholarship is a nonrenewable scholarship for entering freshmen residents of South Carolina who are enrolled full-time. Awards are made automatically; no scholarship application is required.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen under state residency statues.
- Must be a South Carolina resident at the time of high school graduation and during the award period.
- Must have graduated from a South Carolina high school or graduated from a high school outside of South Carolina while a dependent of a parent or legal guardian who is/was a legal resident.
- Must be full-time, first year undergraduate student seeking your first baccalaureate degree.
The Citadel
Annie Wysong Benson-Nana Mae Richer Mizell Scholarship Fund
The Annie Wysong Benson-Nana Mae Richter Mizell Scholarship Fund was initiated in 1982 as the result of contributions from John C. Benson, Citadel Class of 1943, and his wife, Sarah Katharine Benson. The fund is named in honor and memory of their respective mothers. Scholarships are available to average students majoring in Business Administration or Political Science who are active in the framework of The Citadel religious community. In the event a rising junior has three brothers who have graduated from The Citadel or has two brothers graduated and a third brother in the Corps, he would automatically qualify for this award without any reference to the aforementioned stipulations. The first award from this fund was made in 1987.
The Fred J. Carter Scholarship
The Fred J. Carter Scholarship was established in 1994 in memory of Fred J. Carter, Citadel Class of 1967, by his widow, his mother-in-law, his aunt and uncle, and friends. Mr. Carter gave his life in service to his country 5 November 1969, in an F-4 Phantom jet crash in Vietnam. The scholarship is to be awarded to an Air Force ROTC student who is a resident of South Carolina and possesses high standards of leadership, scholarship, and patriotism, in accord with the high standards of The Citadel, with preference given to cadets demonstrating financial need with a major in political science. The first award was made in 1996.
Lander University:
Alumni Departmental Scholarship
This scholarship is provided by the Lander University Alumni Association for students with academic ability and financial need. The 2009-10 student recipient is Mallory Wasik.
The Robbie Barnes Political Science Scholarship
This scholarship honors Roberta J. Barnes’ 75th birthday and was given by the John C. Barnes family. It is awarded to a junior or senior female student majoring in political science with an emphasis in public administration.
The Bill and Emily Bradford Scholarship
This scholarship honors the late J. William and Emily Bradford. The fund was established in 2005 by the Bradfords’ three sons and is designated for a student majoring in political science.
The Caines Political and Social Sciences Scholarship
This scholarship was given by Dr. W. Royce Caines, professor emeritus of economics and former dean of the College of Business and Public Affairs at Lander.
The William Jennings Bryan Dorn Scholarship
This scholarship honors the late William Jennings Brian Dorn. A long-term Member of Congress, Dorn represented Greenwood and the third district of SC in the US House of Representatives from 1947-49 and 1951-74.
The Louise Willing McMullin Scholarship
This scholarship honors Mrs. McMullin and was established in 1995 by Dr. Leo F. McMullin, professor emeritus of political science at Lander. It is awarded to an upper-division student majoring in political science.
This scholarship honors William D. Tinsley, former chairman of the Lander University board of trustees. The fund was established in 1986 as a memorial to Mr. Tinsley by friends and family for a student studying pre-law.
University of South Carolina
This fund will be used to support a series of seminars and lectures, fellowships and internships, administrative functions and other activities related to the John C. West Forum. The expenditures from this fund will be approved by the Forum Director (Cole Blease Graham) in consultation with the Chair of the Department of Political Science and in accordance with general policy and principles set forth by the Forum Advisory Board.
The Patricia Ann Tangney Dumiak Scholarship
Established by Bill and Kathi Tangney, in memory of their daughter, an honors college graduate. The Patricia Ann Taggney Dumiak Scholarship is awarded to a worthy incoming freshman whose major is in the Department of Political Science (International Studies or Political Science). This scholarship is automatically renewed annually for up to 3 years if the student has a 3.5 GPA or higher, is in good
standing with the Honors College and remains a student in the Department of Political Science. No application is necessary beyond the initial Honors College application
Winthrop College
Mary Jeanne Byrd Award For Political & Civic Engagement
The Department of Political Science established the Mary Jeanne Byrd Award to recognize those students whose service to the broader community honors the ideals and spirit of Mary Jeanne Byrd. Byrd’s life was marked by her courageous dedication to the greater social good. Moreover, her career as an educator and activist was marked by historic firsts. Byrd was the first woman to be appointed chair of the Women’s Division American Youth Conference. She was also the first woman member and chair of the South Carolina Insurance Commission and the first woman to be elected president of the South Carolina Political Science Association. Moreover, from 1986 to 1990, Byrd served as chair of the York County Democratic Party. As a professor at Winthrop University, Byrd taught political science for 18 years.
The Mary Jeanne Byrd Award for Political and Civic Engagement will be presented annually to an outstanding undergraduate student majoring in Political Science who, through her or his dedication and commitment to community service, activism, service learning, and/or volunteerism, has enhanced life in the Rock Hill or the greater-Charlotte metropolitan area.
