UAA Pat Brakke Political Science Scholarship
The purpose of the Pat Brakke Political Science Scholarship is to offer financial assistance for tuition and other educational expenses to a full-time student majoring in Political Science.

California Federation of Republican Women
The California Federation of Republican Women is offering a scholarship in honor of President Ronald Reagan.
The annual scholarship of $2,000.00 is being offered to an undergraduate registered Republican woman who is majoring in political science, communication, or directed toward law. The applicant must be a United States citizen who has completed two years of college. The applicant must be a resident of the State of California.
In addition to general financial aid, political science students are eligible for a number of merit-based and/or need-based scholarships. Below is a list of departmental scholarships for which students can apply via the university’s scholarship application.

CS- East Bay
The Political Science Department has a scholarship fund in memory of Prof. J. Malcolm Smith, who passed away on April 26, 2003, at the age of 82. The scholarship was endowed in his memory by the Smith family, with an initial gift of $12,500. Thousands more dollars in donations have since been made by former colleagues and students. In June 2004, the department granted the first three scholarships, in the amount of $500 each, to four political science majors, each of whom had at least a 3.0 G.P.A.

Robert G. Thompson Scholarship
AWARD: $1,200 towards one semester’s tuition (Fall 2009)
Applicants must be a Government undergraduate major, and enrolled full-time (12+ units) during the time the scholarship grant is awarded. They must have earned at least 30 units and have sophomore standing at the time of the receipt of the award and have completed at least one semester at CSUS and possess a minimum GPA of 3.0 overall.
Applicants are required to provide one letter of recommendation from a faculty member, provide transcripts (unofficial transcripts are sufficient), and submit an essay of no more than two double-spaced, typewritten pages in response to the following: The ideal of democracy has been the cornerstone of our political system in the modern world, especially in the United States. But as we enter the 2lst century we have to seriously ask ourselves: Is democracy still possible? Can we make it work?
Douglas McDaniel Memorial Scholarship
Award: Two (2) $700.00 scholarships awarded in Fall 2009
Open to juniors, seniors, or graduate students of CSUS who are Government majors with a focus on International Relations at CSUS, with not less than half-time study at CSUS.
Applicants must have completed at least two semesters at CSUS with an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 AND a 3.50 in the major. Applicants will provide transcripts (unofficial transcripts are sufficient) and two (2) letters of recommendation: One from a faculty member and one from a person (this could be faculty, also) who is able to judge ability based on appropriate practical field or job experience (i.e. and internship). Applicants will submit an essay of no more than two double-spaced, typewritten pages on the following topic: How do you see your education in International Relations relating to your future plans?
Preferences will be given to applicants with a strong academic record, demonstrated interest in public service, senior or graduate standing, prior experience studying or traveling outside the United States, and have studied one or more foreign languages.
Award: $1,000 scholarship towards one semester’s tuition (Fall 2009)
Applicants must be a junior, senior, or graduate student currently enrolled at CSUS who are a Government major or a Government major with an International Relations concentration, with not less than half-time study at CSUS, both at the time of application and during the time of receipt of the award.
Applicants must have completed at least 12 semester units in residence at CSUS (excluding units graded CR/NC), have a minimum GPA of 3.0 overall, as well as at CSUS and also in the major. Applicants must be enrolled in at least one course within the Government Department at the time of the award.
Applicants will provide transcripts (unofficial transcripts are sufficient) and submit an essay of at least one page, double-spaced, typewritten, stating their expected career objectives. Financial need may be considered in the selection process; however, it is not determinative.
Pat and Bill Dorman Scholarship
Award: $500.00 awarded in Fall 2009
This award is open to any undergraduate or graduate student at CSUS who is a major in Government, Journalism or Government /Journalism (with an interest in diversity issues) at the time the scholarship is awarded. This scholarship is open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors classified or unclassified, or those seeking a second bachelor’s degree and have a minimum GPA of 2.0. Applicants must be enrolled full-time (12+ units) at CSUS.
Applicants must provide transcripts (unofficial transcripts are sufficient) and submit an essay of at least one double-spaced, typewritten page that expresses how either Journalism, (“The Fourth Estate”) or Government most usefully can contribute to leveling society’s playing field for minority Americans. Financial need may be considered but is NOT required.
Jack Livingston Fellow in Political Theory & American Institutions Scholarship
AWARD: $1,000 scholarship towards one semester’s tuition (Fall 2009)
3 units of credit for a one-semester activity of choice, as described below
Applicants must be enrolled full-time (12+ units) at CSUS as a junior, senior, or graduate student at the time they receive the award and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or better in their major field. The applicant must also identify a government faculty sponsor or one will be assigned by the department.
In addition to submitting the application, the student must provide transcripts (unofficial transcripts are sufficient) and submit a proposal of no more than two double-spaced, typewritten pages, outlining their plans for a one-semester required activity:
1. A student teaching assignment within the Government Department,
2. An internship approved by the Department Internship coordinator, or;
3. A research project in political theory, American institutions, or a relevant field.
A final evaluation of the semester’s activity is required, and must be submitted to the department chair’s office before the end of the last week of classes in the semester in which the award is made.
League of Women Voters of Sacramento County
Annual awards for female juniors, seniors or graduate students attending an educational institution in the Sacramento area pursuing studies in Public Administration, Government, or Public Policy related programs. Selection is based on academic performance, commitment to public service and career objectives.
Point Loma Nazarene University
Established by Clara Colt Brown. Recipients of this scholarship are to be selected by the department of History/Political Science.
Established from the estate of Della Mendenhall. Student must be a declared International Affairs major with a concentration in Peace Studies.
Floyd and Florence E. Turner Memorial Scholarship
Established through the estate of Florence Turner. Student must be a full-time student, sophomore or higher at the time of application. Must take a minimum of four classes in Political Science in the current year and planning to attend Graduate School.
San Francisco State University
The award will grant one student $4,200 towards their tuition. It is a reflection of Frances Dows’s experience as a political science major at SFSU. Its purpose is to promote women’s engagement in the political arena through active participation by students in progressive political activities.
The David Jenkins Scholarship is awarded to a student who has shown the
“greatest commitment to improving society through political activism”.
The Matthew F. Stolz Scholarship in Political Science
This fellowship will cover a year’s tuition at SFSU minus $27.50 a semester (the amount of tuition it cost Matt Stolz when he went to school).
UC Davis
Political Science Undergraduate Scholarships
This scholarship fund was established by a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. Recipients are upper division political science students who did all of their lower division work at UCD, have solid academic records, and excel at non-academic pursuits such as student government, community service, or athletics.
Nedjelko Dinko Suljak Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established in loving memory of Ned Suljak by his wife, the late Estelle Suljak. Recipients are political science students with demonstrated financial need and a strong interest in pursuing a career in the profession of law.
Lesley Diane Sanchez Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in loving memory of Lesley Sanchez, who would have been a political science major at the time the fund was established. Recipients are continuing political science undergraduates who are female and have demonstrated financial need.
Charles S. Linderman Scholarship for Participatory Democracy
Charles Scott “Chuck” Linderman loved political campaigns. More than that, Linderman was an idealist. In his work for Campaign California, Citizen Action and partisan political efforts, he loved the idea that individuals can make a difference. He lived by the ideals of civil and human rights, economic justice and participatory democracy. He worked passionately to empower and educate people disenfranchised by poverty. The intent of the Linderman Scholarship is to contribute to learning opportunities for activists who demonstrate the desire and ability to engage in the practice of democracy in their neighborhoods, cities and states.
Recipients must demonstrate a potential for community leadership and an interest in participatory democracy. Priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate financial need and come from groups historically underrepresented in, or denied access to, the political process – including but not limited to persons of color and women. This scholarship was established by gifts from the Charles S. Linderman Scholarship Fund for Participatory Democracy.
Clyde Jacobs Distinguished Scholarship Award
Created to honor Professor Clyde Jacobs upon his retirement from the Department. This award given annually to an undergraduate student whose achievements in political science demonstrate exceptional promise as a scholar.
Clare Ficklin was a gifted business woman who was deeply and passionately committed to her community, particularly through her involvement in local, state, and national politics. She cared more about good public policy than ideological boundaries. She supported local causes and participated in policy making at the highest levels of government. Applicants for this scholarship must demonstrate a passion for politics through participation in student government, political groups, and/or career aspirations.
UCLA
Congressman Brad Sherman Scholarship
Award is $1,000.

University of Hawaii
(Fall) is funded with donations from friends, family, and colleagues of the late Harry Friedman to assist students who has some degree of financial need in the graduate program in Political Science at the Manoa campus. Recepients must be enrolled full-time in a graduate program. This award of $250 is given in the fall semester for academic merit demonstrated by a research paper in the sub-field of Comparative Politics. The award-winning research paper ought to reveal a combination of theoretical sophistication and empirical depth on a specific area in Comparative Politics, with sensitivity to issues of third-world development and progress.
Norman Meller Award
(Fall) was created in honor of the Department’s expert in Pacific Islands Studies, now Professor Emeritus. This award is available to graduate students enrolled or accepted in the graduate program in Political Science. Applicants must not hold grants or awards from University sources or the East-West Center during the same period. This award of $1,500 is given in the fall semester for meritorious academic achievement, especially for progress in the Ph.D. program.

Rod and Joyce Chandler Scholarship

Political Science Centennial Scholarship
$150 award for tuition or books given to undergraduate student who demonstrates leadership.
University of Oregon
Neil D. Blackman Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a financially, academically and intellectually deserving student to pursue studies in the humanities or political philosophy relevant to human rights, the responsibilities of individuals to democratic institutions, and public service. The student must demonstrate a broad historic perspective and the courage to practice his or her beliefs.
Alanson H. Kleinsorge Political Science Scholarship
This scholarship is to assist a political science major who shows promise of blossoming into a good or even a great student. Open to freshman applicants for their sophomore year. Requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 after the fall and winter terms of the freshman year.
Michael & Libby McCaslin Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to outstanding junior or senior undergraduate students majoring in Political Science. Candidates will be evaluated on the overall quality of their academic work, commitment to learning, and the potential for further academic achievement.

Independent Colleges of Washington
William G. Saletic Scholarship
Applicant must be a junior or senior at the time of the award, majoring in or studying politics or history. Non-renewable scholarship of up to $1,000.
University of Washington
Agnes C. Nelson Memorial Scholarship
Annual awards for undergraduate students attending the University of Washington who are majoring in Economics or Political Science with a demonstrated interest in both fields. Students must have financial need, a minimum 3.2 GPA, have taken at least 25 credits in economics and political science with a minimum of 10 credits in each department, earned at least 75 credits by the end of spring quarter, and have filed a Financial Aid Form (FAF). H. Paul Castleberry Scholarship
Scholarship for a political science major (sophomore, junior, or senior) maintaining no less than a 3.0 grade point average.
Claudius O. Johnson Memorial Scholarship in Political Science
Scholarship for juniors or seniors; based on scholastic excellence, character, and need.
Judges Thomas and Marshall Neill Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship for pre-law majors in political science. Students must be deserving of financial need, a full-time student, and making satisfactory progress toward a degree.
William F. Mullen Undergraduate Scholarship
Scholarship for a declared political science major with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who has not reached graduating senior status by the time of selection. Special consideration will be given to those who emphasize ethnic politics or practical (electoral) politics. A statement of intent concerning interests, future goals, and an indication of financial need is required.
Scholarship for those who have demonstrated scholastic excellence and outstanding character in political science.
Those who are studying political science demonstrating satisfactory academic progress. May be renewable, based on progress.
William M. Landeen & Claudius O. Johnson Scholarship
Scholarship for those interested or majored in political science or history. Based on financial need and merit.
Scholarship based on scholastic excellence, character, and financial need. Preference will be given to current sophomores and juniors. Eligibility normally limited to pre-law majors or those who are clearly in preparation for law school.
