Description: This scholarship was established in 1999 through a bequest from alumnus Arthur Rosien. Recipients must be full-time political science majors with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or better.


University of Maine at Farmington

The Lawrence (Buzz) Warren Scholarship

Awarded to a UMF student who is majoring in history or interdisciplinary-political science/social science and who is in good academic standing.

University of Maine at Presque Isle

Paris Snow Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to high school graduates, preferably from Aroostook County, who show interest in environmental-related studies, political science, or public management.

University of Southern Maine

Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram Scholarship

These scholarships seeks to attract students of color enrolled as full-time students as an undergraduate at the University of Southern Maine to careers in media, especially print journalism. Other possible areas include writing, editing, reporting, marketing, finance, and public relations. Applications, in particular, are welcome from USM students majoring in business administration, communication, English, history, media studies, and political science.


Northeastern University

Michael and Charlotte Baer Scholarships

These scholarships assist political science majors on study abroad, internships abroad, or international co-op assignments. The grants are typically $200-$500 and can be used to help defray travel and other overseas expenses. This scholarship was created by Michael Baer, a political scientist and former Provost of Northeastern University.

Robert L. Cord Endowed Book Fund

Awards from this fund help to defray the costs of books and other course materials. Students majoring in the social sciences, humanities and arts are eligible. Middlers must have a 3.0 or higher QPA, and juniors and seniors must have a 3.25 or higher QPA. This fund was established by Robert Cord, a former member of the Political Science faculty.

Sean Patrick O’Rourke Scholarship

At the beginning of each fall term, a small number of scholarships are given to junior or senior Political Science majors with top grade point averages and financial need. This scholarship fund was established by the parents of Sean O’Rourke, a Northeastern political science major killed in an automobile accident in 1989. The department identifies recipients of this scholarship.

University of Massachusetts Amherst

George Goodwin, Jr. Scholarship
Granted annually to an academically strong Political Science major who has expressed and demonstrated an interest in a career in public services.

David C. Knapp Scholarship
Granted annually to Political Science majors who have compiled the most outstanding records of academic achievement.  In recent years about 8-12 Knapp Scholarships have been awarded.  Recipients are normally selected during their Junior year, making the scholarship funds available during their Senior year.

Tracey Lee Maker Memorial Scholarship
Granted annually to a full-time Political Science major on the basis of, first, demonstrated financial need and, second, outstanding academic achievement.  Recipients are normally selected during their Sophomore or Junior years, making scholarship funds available the following year.

James P. Pappas Presidential Scholarship
Provides scholarship assistance to students enrolled at the Amherst campus majoring in Political Science who exhibit high academic achievement and some level of financial need.

Luther A. Allen Scholarship
The purpose of the Fund will be to endow awards for undergraduate students in good academic standing with demonstrated interest in international relations, and Francophile studies including French-speaking nations and/or provinces. The Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences will select recipient and administer the Fund.


University of New Hampshire


Caroline L Gross Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement in Political Science

This award has been established to Caroline L Gross, the first woman to be selected as majority leader of the New Hampshire House of Representatives. Two political science students are selected each year and the award is a book in the field of Political Science not to exceed $50 from the UNH Book Exchange. The award is made annually to senior status, New Hampshire residents majoring in Political Science and demonstrating academic excellence. The political science department faculty determines the award recipient.

Plymouth State University

Catherine and Kirk Middlekauf Fund
The purpose of this endowment fund is to support awards or stipends for social science students majoring in geography, history, anthropology, sociology, or political science.  Funds may be used by students for travel related to particular social science or interdisciplinary courses.  Funds may be applied to the course credit fee or to travel expenses (i.e., accommodations, airfare, food, etc.) for study away from PSU campuses.


Aime & Gertrude Forand Scholarship Fund

Annual awards for undergraduate students attending Providence College who are majoring in Political Science. Selection is based on academic achievements, financial need, potential, and community/school activities. Due date, award amount and number of awards may vary. Nonrenewable.

University of Rhode Island

Heidi Allen Memorial Scholarship

Income from endowment, established by parents and friends of Heidi Allen, awarded to a student with financial need who is a political science major.

Duffy Endowed Scholarship

Income from endowment for a scholarship awarded annually to a junior or senior majoring in economics, journalism, history, or political science on the basis of academic average (3.80 or better) and demonstrated financial need. Recipient selected by the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in consultation with the student financial aid office.

Eric F. Kumpf Memorial Journalism and Political Science Scholarship

Income from endowment for scholarships awarded annually to undergraduate political science and journalism majors on the basis of need and merit.

John Stitely Memorial Scholarship

In memory of Professor John O. Stitley, Hon ‘71, income from endowment for a scholarship in political science.

Donald Strauss Legislative Internship Endowment

Income from endowment given preferably to a member of the junior class to finance a summer at the Rhode Island Legislature, serving either a state senator or state representative. Recipient selected by Department of Political Science designee.

David Warren Scholarship

Income from endow[went awarded annually to a student majoring in political science. Recipient selected by the Department of Political Science.

Wheaton College

Thomas F. Black Jr. Memorial Scholarship of the Rhode Island Bar Association
Deadline: March 9

The Rhode Island Bar Foundation’s Thomas F. Black, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1989 to support and foster high legal practice standards by assisting Rhode Island residents who show promise that they will become outstanding lawyers and who need financial assistance to study law. The scholarship is a one year, non-renewable award, for full-time students who are Rhode Island residents who will be entering their first year of law school. Two scholarships in the amount of $10,000.00 each will be awarded.


Castleton State College

The David C. Chabut Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to a student at one of the Vermont State Colleges who has completed at least 24 credits, has a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2, is a Vermont resident, has demonstrated financial need, and is pursuing studies in business, economics or political science. Preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated a commitment to community service. The scholarship will rotate annually from CSC to JSC to LSC to VTC beginning for the 08-09 academic year with CSC.

Mollie Beattie Scholarship

Recipient must have achieved Junior status during the semester of the award. Must have declared a minor in Environmental Studies, have completed at least 30 hours at Castleton State College, and have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Must be recommended by a member of the faculty of the Natural Science or History, Geography, Economics or Politics departments. Must be a Vermont resident. However, if there is no eligible VT resident meeting this criteria the scholarship committee will award the scholarship to a non-Vermonter who meets all the other criteria. Preference will be given to any student who plans a career in public or non-profit service in a field related to environmental protection or management and who is also a candidate for a non-Castleton grant, scholarship or fellowship.

Verna Griffin-Richardson Internship

Verna Griffin-Richardson is still active in the Washington D.C. area. Students must be political Science, Public Administration or Legal Studies major with a 3.25 GPA in major courses and 3.0 overall GPA. Student must have a minimum of 75 hours and must have recommendation of faculty in major.
