The George O’Connor Scholarship
Primary Award: $1,500 per year for three years; Runner-up Award: $500 per year for three years. Montana resident for four years prior to the award; successful demonstration of academic ability during the freshman year as demonstrated by a GPA of at least 3.0; indication of a sense of service to school, community, and state; enrollment in a business, engineering, scientific, political science, or history degree program.

Maud and Grover Waldron Scholarship $700
The purpose of the Maud and Grover Waldron Scholarship is to provide an annual award to a junior, senior or graduate student majoring in political science or public administration. Preference is given to undergraduates and to applicants who express a career interest in state and/or local government. The recipient’s political science grade point average must be at least 3.40.
Anthony “Tony” Allen Newberry (Doohan) Scholarship $500
The purpose of the Anthony “Tony” Allen Newberry (Doohan) Scholarship is to provide an annual award to a political science major with an interest in international studies. The recipient must have demonstrated academic achievement. It is a preference that a different student receives this award each year.
Alan D. Robertson Memorial Scholarship $700
The purpose of the Alan D. Robertson Memorial Scholarship is to provide an annual award to a political science major who is a sophomore, junior or senior at The University of Montana. The recipient must be a Montana high school graduate, carry a grade point average of 3.0 or above, and have demonstrated leadership activities on campus or in the community.
Susan K. Grebeldinger Scholarship $1,000
The purpose of the Susan K. Grebeldinger Scholarship is to provide an annual award to an undergraduate or graduate student with a political science major or minor with preference to one who has a career or scholarly interest in legal studies. However, this is not available to a law student or other professional student. Candidates must submit a strong writing sample with a legal emphasis, carry an excellent grade point average, and be a full-time UM student through the year of the award.
Thomas Payne Memorial Scholarship $1,400
The purpose of the Thomas Payne Memorial Scholarship is to provide an annual award to a political science major who is a junior, senior, or graduate student, will be a full-time UM student throughout the year of award, has an excellent GPA, and has demonstrated high performance in Political Science courses.
James P. and Margaret B. Brennan Scholarship $900
The purpose of the James P. and Margaret B. Brennan Scholarship is to provide an annual award to a student studying political science at The University of Montana.
H. David and Joyce E. Hunt Scholarship $2,500
The Hunt Scholarship is awarded to help recruit and retain students in the Political Science Department who are interested in a career that emphasizes local government public administration and policymaking.
1. The scholarship recipient shall be selected based on the following criteria: (a) major in Political Science with junior or graduate standing; (b) a career interest in local government public administration and policymaking; (c) academic achievement; (d) financial need; (e) a strong work-ethic attitude; and (f) commitment to interning with a Missoula local government.
2. These selection criteria must be addressed by the applicant in a short essay, a letter of recommendation from a Political Science faculty member, college transcript(s), and financial aid certification from the UM Financial Aid Office.
3. To remain qualified for the Hunt scholarship, the selected recipient during the award year is required to maintain a 3.25 or better grade point average and good standing with the policies and conditions set forth by The University of Montana.
4. The recipient shall be selected by the Political Science Scholarship Committee based on the above criteria and application materials, in consultation with the donors.
5. The award payment shall be divided between fall and spring semesters.
Kain/McKay Scholarships (3 available) $1,200 each
Recipients of Kain/McKay scholarships shall be selected based on the following criteria: a) Political Science undergraduate major, b) full-time UM student during the entire year of award, c) excellent GPA and high performance in Political Science courses, and d) 15 credits in Political Science (including current registration) at time of application.
E. Paul Sliter Memorial Scholarship $2,900
To provide scholarships for deserving students at UM who are majoring in political science. A recipient must be a junior or senior, must have participated in community service and must have demonstrated political involvement. The number of scholarship awards to be given in any one year shall be one or two in order to be more meaningful in size rather than several smaller awards. The recipients shall be determined by a scholarship selection committee made up of the Chair and at least one other faculty member, both from the Political Science Department, as well as Elaine Taylor or her appointee.
