Criteria: The recipient must be a declared major in political science with demonstrated academic ability.

Walter Howe Memorial Political Science Scholarship

Department/Contact: Political Science/Department Chair

Criteria: The recipient must be a declared political science major who is a junior at time of application with an overall grade point average of 3.0 and a departmental grade point average 3.25 or above. “Effort” will be weighted more critically than grade point average. Preference will be given to applicants showing an interest in civil rights, affirmative action or other contemporary issues. Financial need may be a determining factor.

Political Science Endowed Scholarship

Criteria: The recipient must be a declared major in political science with demonstrated interest in civic affairs.

John Hopkins University

Rex T. Chao Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1997 in memory of Rex T. Chao. This scholarship supports an incoming freshman for four years of study and is based on need and interests in the study and performance of classical music, with first preference given to a student with an intention to pursue a major in political science.

Hollander Memorial Fund

This fund was established in 1991 in honor of the late Dr. Jacob Hollander to provide scholarships in the field of political economy.

Sweetser Linthicum Esquire Scholarship Fund

Established in 1997 to provide scholarships to deserving students majoring in the fields of history and/or political science.

Helen C. Potter Scholarship

Established in 1988 to support worthy and needy undergraduates in the field of political economy.

Isabel S. F. and Hadley K. Turner Scholarship Fund

Established in 1973 by Mr. and Mrs. Turner in memory of their son, Julius Turner. The fund provides scholarship assistance in political science annually on the basis of character, diligence in the pursuit of learning, scholastic standing consistent with a student’s capabilities, and financial need.

Zitzmann Family Scholarship

Established in 1998 to support need-based undergraduates in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. Preference given to history, English, or political science majors.

Julius Turner Memorial Prize

Parents, friends, and relatives of the late Julius Turner, former student and teacher of political science, have contributed funds to make available an annual prize every spring for the best senior essay in the Department of Political Science. A committee consisting of faculty and alumni makes the presentation annually. All majors in the Department of Political Science are eligible to compete.

Established by trustee emerita Esther Coopersmith and her husband Jack to recognize outstanding political leadership in the senior class.


The Lee Family Fund for the Hampton Davey Award
Established by the faculty in 2000 as a tribute to Associate Professor of Political Science “Red” Davey. Awarded to an outstanding senior majoring in political science.

Towson University

The Smart A. Expo Scholarship

Dr. Smart A. Expo was a professor of Political Science for many years. His estate established a small scholarship fund to assist the the tuition of students interested in African American Politics.

To apply for the Smart A. Expo Scholarship in Political Science you must:

  • Be a political science major with senior status.
  • Have at least a 3.00 overall grade point average.
  • Demonstrate an interest in African-American politics through your studies, experiences, extracurricular activities, or expected career goals.
