Carrie Chapman Catt Prize for Research on Women and Politics

This annual competition is designed to encourage and reward scholars embarking on significant research in the area of women and politics. The prize includes a $1,000 cash award for each project selected. Honorable mention prizes of $500 per project are sometimes given.

Iowa State University

The Ross Talbot Outstanding Graduating Senior Scholarship Award

Awarded to honor the academic and personal achievement of a graduating political science major.  Students eligible to be considered for this award must have achieved over four years an overall minimum 3.5 GPA in all academic courses at Iowa State University.

Amount: $750

Submit a one-page written statement formally applying for this scholarship including your name, address, e-mail address, phone number, overall GPA, and political science GPA with a list of the specific courses taken in political science at Iowa State.  In 1-2 paragraphs of the statement, discuss your immediate and long-term career goals that you intend to pursue following your graduation this May from Iowa State.  Please attach a resume to your application.

Don Hadwiger Working Student Scholarship Award

Awarded to an undergraduate political science major who works part-time to support the costs of attending ISU. Student must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better, be an undergraduate major in political science with at least sophomore standing, and show evidence of working to earn part of college expenses.

Amount: $500

Young W. Kihl Scholarship

Awarded to a junior or senior political science major with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 who has demonstrated excellence in the field of international politics.

Amount:  $350

Submit a one-page written statement formally applying for this scholarship including your name, address, email address, phone number, GPA, a list of relevant courses in international politics and grades received in them, and a summary of your interest in or other activities related to international politics.  Please attach a resume to your application.

Serge Garrison Scholarship

Awarded to a student who will be a junior or senior political science major by Fall 2009 (students graduating prior to Spring 2010 are not eligible).

Criteria:

  1. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  2. The recipient shall demonstrate leadership ability and excellence in campus and extra-curricular activities as evidenced by such things as: active participation/leadership role in a recognized student organization, active participation/leadership role in a professional organization, honors and awards received and/or active participation/leadership role in community service as determined by the awarding authority.
  3. First preference shall go to applicants from North Dakota or Iowa.
  4. Second preference shall go to applicants who demonstrate pre-law interests, as determined by the awarding authority.
  5. As a provision of receiving the scholarship the 3rd House requests that the scholarship recipient attend the annual reception sponsored by the 3rd House.

The 3rd House Memorial Scholarship

Legacy of Heroines Scholarship
The Legacy of Heroines scholarship provides scholarships to outstanding young women who seek involvement in and knowledge about the political process and public service. Scholarship awards are based on academic merit, leadership and specific criteria established by scholarship donors.

Northwestern College

Earl T. Klay Scholarship

This scholarship initially was established by an anonymous donor and was later expanded with funding from the Earl T. Klay ’38 estate. It was established in recognition of Earl’s strong relationship with Northwestern College.

M. D. Van Oosterhout Political Science Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Judge M. D. Van Oosterhout and his wife, Ethel. It provides assistance to a worthy junior or senior who needs financial aid and who is pursuing a pre-law course or a vocation based on the study of political science.

Scott County Republican Women Scholarship
Scholarship has been established to provide financial assistance to a deserving Republican female college level junior, senior or graduate student from Scott County (Iowa) to further her education at a college or university in Iowa. Award is $500 annual to a woman from Scott County (Iowa). Qualifications:
1) Applicants must have a declared major of Political Science, Government, History, International Relations or Public Administration, and be enrolled for a minimum of 12 credit hours.
2) Student’s primary residence must be located in Scott County (Iowa)
3) Applicant must be a United States citizen.
4) Non-traditional students are eligible.
5) Student must be a registered member of the Republican Party.
6) Student must be involved in extracurricular activities (please submit description).
7) Student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or above on a 4.0 scale (must submit copy of transcript with application).
8 ) Student must submit a 750 word essay outlining their activities in the political process.
9) Student must submit one letter of recommendation from a professor who teaches in the student’s declared major at the educational institution they are attending.
10) All applications must be complete for consideration.
