COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, is currently the 4th leading cause of death, but will be the third leading cause of death by 2020. The NIH estimates that 12 million individuals have been diagnosed with COPD, and 12 million more are symptomatic or developing COPD.
COPD is an umbrella term used to describe any one of or a whole group of lung diseases. The lung diseases include emphysema, chronic bronchitis, refractory asthma, and severe bronchiectasis. COPD can rob individuals and their family of their livelihood, their quality of life and their future. The costs to the healthcare system and to society are enormous. But, there is much that can be done.

Director of Development:
The COPD Foundation, established in 2004, is a leading organization dedicated to developing and supporting research, education, early diagnosis and enhanced therapy for persons whose lives are impacted by Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Through a collaborative agreement, the Alpha-1 Foundation is supporting the COPD Foundation’s start-up with staff and financial resources. The current annual budget is close to $5 million, with over 90% restricted to programs. The COPD Foundation seeks a dynamic, forward thinking fundraising professional to join its team. This individual will be responsible for developing and implementing the organization’s overall fundraising strategies.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement targeted fundraising strategies and tactics to build the COPD donor base through activities such as major giving, planned giving, grants, membership appeals, direct mail solicitations, and on-line giving.
- Develop and implement fundraising strategies for the COPD Digest audience.
- Develop and implement strategies to use the Foundation’s web site to raise funds and increase involvement by potential donors.
- Assist in obtaining corporate and foundation grants for various COPD Foundation programs.
- Develop strategies to maximize return from special events.
- Work with board members, staff and donors to identify funding opportunities and to assist in achieving objectives.
- Establish and achieve the Foundation’s annual revenue budget; manage the fundraising annual expense budget.
- Devise key business processes, departmental structure, management practices and communications. Develop analytic reports to track and evaluate program and department performance.
- Hire, train and supervise subordinate staff in all aspects of fundraising and administration as funding becomes available.
- Priorities for the next 12 to 18 Months
- Establish a mechanism to engage the existing database membership in regular giving to the Foundation.
- Identify high income and high profile individual donors.
- Identify foundations and corporations that are interested in fiscally supporting the Foundation and its mission.
- Clarify the role of special events in overall annual funding.
Requirements:
- BA a must, Masters preferred; Five or more years of Development experience
- Familiarity with medical research and care issues a plus
- Experience in building relationships with donors
- Experience in major gifts, planned gifts, grant writing, direct mail and membership appeals, special events
- Experience in using the internet to raise funds and increase involvement by potential donors
- Experience in promoting programs to appeal to donors
- Experience working cooperatively with volunteers
- Familiar with Raiser’s Edge and prospect research software
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to travel to meet with donors
- Desire to be part of an evolving organization and to contribute to its growth and reputation
- Ability to be flexible and to keep a global perspective while managing day-to-day detail
