Policy Analyst – 32BJ Job
The Political Department of 32BJ seeks a Policy Analyst to support the legislative and issue-based work of the union. This position reports to the Director of Policy and Legislation and is housed in the Union’s Political Department.
With more than 110,000 members in eight states and Washington, DC, 32BJ is the largest property service workers union in the country. 32BJ is affiliated with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), an organization of over 2 million members united by a belief in the dignity and worth of workers and the services they provide. Our members are security officers; doormen, porters, and maintenance workers; bus drivers and aides; window cleaners and food service workers. To raise industry standards and improve lives, SEIU and 32BJ focuses its resources on organizing new members and winning policy and legislative campaigns that will strengthen workers’ rights and create economic opportunities for low-income workers and their families.
For years, the Union has been at forefront of moving a progressive policy agenda on the federal, state and local levels, and has led and won campaigns on living and prevailing wage laws, responsible development standards, and access to health care across its regions. Specifically, 32BJ’s priorities include the issues of: responsible economic development; public procurement; energy efficiency and green buildings; employer-based health insurance; immigration reform, workplace standards, such as paid sick days, and supporting workers’ rights to organize. The Policy staff is responsible for conceiving of, implementing, and managing legislative and administrative campaigns to policies in all of our regions.
The Analyst will be responsible for:
•                    Researching policy and legislative issues in 32BJ’s multi-state and NY regions
•                    Drafting of testimony, memos, and position papers
•                    Meeting with policymakers and other stakeholders
•                    Advocating for issues and educating members about policy and legislation
•                    Briefing Officers and staff on currently policy and legislative campaigns
•                    Working with the Director of Policy to plan the long-term agenda for the Union
Applicants should have:
A minimum of 3 years of experience in labor, government, non-profits, or other relevant positions that included policy and legislative work
Strong writing and communication skills
Experience working successfully with policymakers and government officials/staffs and public policy advocates
Familiarity with the policy issues relevant to 32BJ
Ability to work under deadline and to work collaboratively with colleagues

New York State Legislative Intern

This internship would provide the opportunity to learn about New York State government and the legislative process. Interns would be part of issue-based campaigns pertaining to health care or economic development and would assist in developing campaign strategy and materials, arranging and participating in meetings with elected officials, and recruiting and training union members to lobby on the legislation.

New York City Legislative Intern

This internship would provide the opportunity to learn about New York City government and the legislative process. Interns would be part of issue-based campaigns pertaining to economic development, workplace standards, and other issues affecting working New Yorkers. Interns will assist in developing campaign strategy and materials, arranging and participating in meetings
with elected officials, and recruiting and training union members to lobby on the legislation.

Political Operations

The political operations intern will assist with overall campaign and field operations, which help
support the union’s political, electoral, and member engagement work. Interns will be involved in
coordinating field and political operations all over the city and the state, working closely with
local 32BJ member volunteers, and organizing GOTV efforts all across the state and other
regions. Interns will have opportunities to work with candidates and elected officials who support
the union’s agenda and overall mission to protect the rights of workers.

Public Policy Intern

Policy interns will support the legislative and issue-based work of the union. The intern will
report to the Director of Policy and will be responsible for: researching policy and legislative
issues in 32BJ’s multi-state and NY regions, drafting of memos/position papers, meeting with
policymakers and other stakeholders, and advocating for issues and educating members about
policy and legislation

The North Carolina House Democratic Committee is seeking campaign managers for 2010 State House Campaigns.  Campaign Managers will be responsible for preparing a campaign and field plan as well as day-to-day activities including door-to-door canvassing, volunteer recruitment, scheduling, fundraising, coordinating research, polling and media communication and all logistical tasks associated with the campaign.

Online Strategies Manager

Families USA seeks a talented individual for the position of Online
Strategies Manager. This individual will be responsible for managing
and implementing Families USA’s online advocacy strategies;
cultivating relationships with bloggers; strengthening and expanding
our online advocacy efforts; and supporting e-mail communications to
Families USA activists.

Families USA is a national nonprofit, non-partisan organization
dedicated to the achievement of high-quality, affordable health care
for all Americans. Working at the national, state, and community
levels, we have earned a reputation as an effective voice for health

With the passage of health reform, the Online Strategies Manager will
help Families USA transition its online legislative campaign (Stand Up
for Health Care) to an interactive online presence that meets our
organizational goals for health reform implementation.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

•       Manage a full-time online advocacy staff member;
•       Manage the micro-site (Stand Up for Health Care) for the remainder
of health reform:
o       Write blog entries and coordinate blog postings among staff;
o       Write and coordinate the production of web content and online
campaigns;
o       Regularly update site with new content and day-to-day maintenance as
necessary;
o       Analyze and report on web metrics;
•       Help Families USA transition its online advocacy strategies away
from a legislative campaign to an interactive online presence that
furthers our organization’s goals (i.e. public education, consumer
advocate/watchdog, partnerships with state advocates) during health
reform implementation;
•       Help the Families USA Web Team make the best use of new media and
online tools to further the goals of the organization on the Families
USA Web site;
•       Manage relationships between Families USA and online consultants as
needed to develop ongoing web, marketing and fundraising strategies;
•       Cultivate blogger relationships and communications;
•       Write and edit compelling e-mail action alerts for delivery to a
nation-wide network of committed health care advocates and activists;
•       Keep abreast of the latest trends on the Internet (particularly as
they relate to online advocacy), bring them to the attention of staff,
and explore ways to use these trends creatively to the organization’s
advantage.

Desired qualities and characteristics:

-       Familiarity with Get Active CMS and CRM (or equivalent), and Expression Engine a plus.
-       Technical competency desirable, but not required.
-       Comfortable working in a collaborative and dynamic environment.
-       Responsible, mature, and able to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously.
-       Dedicated to quality, affordable health care and coverage for all.
