Do any of these efforts ring a bell?
- Calling for more arms inspections rather than an invasion of Iraq
- Reinstatement of lower limits on arsenic and mercury pollution
- Changing Facebook’s “Beacon” program, which notified Facebook users about purchases made by people on their friends list
MoveOn.org spearheaded each of these campaigns and continues to change politics by giving contributions to candidates to advance causes in Congress and helping elect selected political candidates. Joan Blades and Wes Boyd first started MoveOn.org in 1998 as an e-mail group with the objective of passing a petition asking Congress to “censure Bill Clinton and move on,” as an alternative to impeaching him. After collecting 500,000 signatures and successfully meeting their goal, MoveOn.org developed into the influential non-profit that it is today.
